Paradox inside an Enigma: Engage Mid-Hudson's Puzzling Kickoff

Posted on 11:26 AM by Unknown

I submitted this piece to The Lincoln Eagle early this morning.

Newburgh, NY, July 30--Lincoln Eagle exclusive.  About 200 people, mostly town-and-county-level politicians and bureaucrats, descended upon the Newburgh campus of Orange County Community College to participate in Engage Mid-Hudson's kickoff.  Engage Mid-Hudson is one of 10 regional sustainability groups that Governor Andrew Cuomo has funded through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). The mid-Hudson region extends north from Westchester through Rockland, Putnam, and Orange, to Dutchess and Ulster Counties.  Co-chairs David Church, planning commissioner of Orange County, and Thomas Madden, commissioner of community development and sustainability for the Town of Greenburgh, led the meeting.

Assemblyman Frank Skartados, representing the Newburgh (100th) Assembly District, offered a few opening remarks. He thought that Engage Mid-Hudson is out to streamline government.  A paradox became evident a few minutes later when Mr. Church divulged that Governor Andrew Cuomo had spent $100 million to fund the 10 regional sustainability groups (according to NYSERDA's website the booty was split evenly across the 10 regions).  I asked Mr. Church whether the aim of streamlining government is consistent with eight-digit slush funds.  Mr. Church's answer was that the endowment reflects the voters' will, even though the senior elected official present, Mr. Skartados, had just expressed a preference for streamlining government. Also, since the majority of New York residents in my lifetime have fled the state because of excessive costs and mismanagement, it is difficult to know whose preferences Mr. Cuomo has in mind: waste's victims or its progenitors.

A second paradox followed.  Engage Mid-Hudson bills itself as open to public opinion, but a number of pro-freedom activists were present, and they called out questions during Mr. Church's talk.  Mr. Church handled the disagreement well, but several members in the audience began to berate the pro-freedom activists.  One, whom one of the freedom activists alleged is the owner of a green development firm that stands to profit from Engage Mid-Hudson, suggested to Mr. Church that the freedom activists be banned from future meetings.  It would seem that owners of businesses that stand to directly profit from Engage Mid-Hudson should be required to identify themselves at the beginning of meetings.  It seems as likely as not that Engage Mid-Hudson is just one more Democratic Party scam, like Maurice Hinchey's green development follies and Barack Obama's bailouts.
A third paradox became evident when Mr. Church announced six working groups, including one for economic development.  Herb Oringel, an IBM retiree and chair of the economic development consortium, claimed that Engage Mid-Hudson could bring jobs to the region. Activist Glenda Rose McGee asked what kind of jobs could a tax-based bureaucracy like Engage Mid-Hudson create.  The question was a good one.  Henry Hazlitt's Economics in One Lesson explains why the broken window fallacy, an economic fallacy that has re-gained currency under the Bush and Obama administrations, is incorrect.  Government cannot make work by breaking windows.  The reason is that to pay for the broken window repair someone must be taxed.  The taxed money reduces private sector demand.  By advocating government spending and higher taxes, groups like Engage Mid-Hudson destroy legitimate jobs, jobs that satisfy legitimate market demand, and replace them with jobs that reflect the needs of politicians and special interests.

Mr. Oringel's response to Ms. McGee was not reassuring. His chief example of jobs creation was the turning of Sing Sing Correctional Facility into a tourist attraction.  I would feel better if a private developer were to take the project because Mr. Oringel's IBM experience has not prepared him to assess market risk of this kind. For example, might Steve Wynn be willing to take gambling up the river? Engage Mid-Hudson and Governor Cuomo don't know. Since they are not going to invest their own money, they don't care in the same way that Steve Wynn would. There is little difference between Mr. Oringel's project and window breaking.

In a question-and-answer period Ms. McGee raised a further point: regional sustainability plans are likely a pretext for more intensive intervention and regulation. In particular, the Towns of Woodstock, Olive and Saugerties have seen proposals for the construction of unneeded planned housing projects tightly linked to sustainability plans.

I raised a question as to Engage Mid-Hudson's identity.  I asked whether it is a government organization or a non-government organization.  Mr. Church said that it is neither. This was a fourth paradox because if Engage Mid-Hudson is neither a government nor a non-government organization, then it does not exist and it cannot cash NYSERDA's $10 million check. Tsk, tsk--a Zen-like conundrum any green business crony can ponder.

Rife with paradox the meeting was unpersuasive.  What is the purpose of Engage Mid-Hudson beyond providing funding for crooked, green businesses?  In Canada and elsewhere NGOs have been used to subvert republican governmental structures and regulatory authority. In the tradition of New York's honest graft, are we to expect just one more deal in the Plunkitt tradition or a more serious incursion on republicanism?

Patriots –

Yesterday 3 Republicans on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee joined with the Democrats and passed the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Treaty.

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), who has led opposition to the treaty, fought for a reservation to the treaty but was voted down when Sens Dick Lugar (R-Ind.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) joined the 10 Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“The last thing we want as a country is for our courts to deem some of our disabled policies against the law, because they're different,” DeMint said. “Because we want them to be better than what the United Nations can do.”

We need to take action. Call the 3 senators who voted for the CRPD treaty and tell them to oppose the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Treaty.

Senator Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) (202) 224-4814

Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) (202) 224-6441

Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) (202) 224-3643

Call your own senator and ask them to oppose the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Treaty (CRPD).

UN Treaty Mischief on Disabilities

The United Nations in collusion with Obama's globalists has cooked up another scheme to slice off a piece of U.S. sovereignty and put us under global government. The plan is to stampede the Senate into ratifying the U.N. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, CRPD.

CRPD's Article 7 gives the government the power to override every decision of the parent of a disabled child by using the caveat "the best interest of the child." This phrase has already been abused by family courts to substitute judges' decisions for parents' decisions and transferring the use of that phrase to the government or to a U.N. committee is the wrong way to go.

HBO's The Newsroom Reflects Aaron Sorkin's Bad Ethics

Posted on 1:47 AM by Unknown
Time Warner's HBO unit is progressive.  This is not surprising because progressivism, the ideology of Bernard Baruch and Warren Buffett, reflects HBO's owner, Time Warner's, interests.  Starting in the third episode, creator Aaron Sorkin, who has recently fired next season's writing staff, allows political zealotry to careen out of control.  The show's strident ideology eliminates its entertainment value.

The show begins by depicting lead character Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) as a Republican; it then attributes an assortment of left wing ideological positions to him. The only Republicans who share McAvoy's views are New York City's Upper East Side elite, embodied in the city's authoritarian, billionaire mayor, Michael Bloomberg, and its former governor, Nelson Rockefeller.  Like the Upper East Side Republicans, McAvoy pretends to care for the poor, all the while pursuing Wall Street's and HBO owner Time Warner's interests.

New York City Republicans, known in Theodore Roosevelt's day as Progressives, in Reagan's day as Rockefeller Republicans, and today as RINOs, tend to be more left wing than Democrats or Republicans who cannot afford to live on Manhattan Island. The show's Progressivism reflects the  preferred ideology of the super rich.

Progressivism links to Wall Street and money center banking. In fact, its chief proponent during the second half of the twentieth century was David Rockefeller, the chairman of Chase Manhattan Bank and the wealthiest of the many Rockefeller heirs. (Only one of hundreds of Rockefeller heirs, at 97 David Rockefeller is the 159th richest man in America.)  Naturally, Progressives keep the interests of banks and Wall Street uppermost in mind. The media, including Time Warner, have offered monotone support for the multi-trillion dollar bank bailouts of recent years (according to the Jerome Levy Economic Institute,  amounting to $29 trillion, more than twice the entire economy).  As well, Time Warner has tirelessly supported a two-party system that has yielded rich benefits.

Another of the show's deceptions is its attack on Charles and David Koch.  The Kochs have certainly funded libertarian and conservative movements--just as David Rockefeller has supported the Council on Foreign Relations, George Soros has supported Barack Obama, and the Sulzbergers have supported the inheritance tax for everyone but themselves. (The fifth generation of Sulzbergers has inherited The New York Times through a trust free of tax--they would not own The Times otherwise--but The Times advocates a stiff inheritance tax for small businessmen and farmers.)

The Newsroom's Will McAvoy considers George Soros's donations to progressive causes  as pure in intent, but the Kochs' donations as purely corrupt. This is deceitful propaganda.  I question Sorkin's and HBO's ethics in making claims like this.  Much of what the Kochs have done, such as David Koch's candidacy for vice-president in 1980 on the Libertarian Party ticket, has had little to do with personal gain.  If the Cato Institute is corrupt, the Brookings Institute, advocate of Wall Street bailouts,  is twice as corrupt.

A third deception is the show's peculiar claim that because the Kochs are slightly wealthier than Soros (Soros, with $20 billion, is seventh on the Forbes 400 while the Koch brothers, with $25 billion each, are tied for fourth), their donations reflect special interests, but Soros's don't.  The claim that $20 billion is too little for Soros to be motivated to engage in securing political gains through political donations is one of the strangest  and most ridiculous claims ever made on television, especially in light of the billions he has received from President Obama via the Ex-Im Bank. Michael Bloomberg, the 14th richest on the Forbes list, secured a third term as mayor by making blanket donations to New York's state legislators. That could not possibly be corrupt because Bloomberg is a Progressive who is busily reinventing slum living in the name of green development.

The show gets the difference between the Kochs' and Soros's wealth wrong.  You would think that a show devoted to advocating accuracy in news reporting would gets its own facts right, but the show makes repeated factual errors.  I took a minute and looked up the Forbes 400 list. Sorkin is, apparently, too incompetent to do so.  On the show Will McAvoy claims that the Kochs can buy Soros ten times over. That is incorrect. Combined the Kochs have 2.5 times Soros's money.  I would add that, unlike Soros, the Kochs produce value for consumers in exchange for their wealth. Soros is a financial manipulator who produces nothing of value for anyone but himself, and frequently engages in market manipulation and deceit to make his money.  He was convicted in France and indicted in England for financial manipulation. He was also accused of manipulating the Thai bhat and causing great suffering in Thailand in the late 1990s.

Another example of simple factual error is Will McAvoy's etiology of the tea party. The Tea Party was created by Ron Paul.  It is a slanderous lie that many of the tea party chapters received funding from the Kochs. I belonged to the Kingston-Rhinebeck Tea Party and am familiar with several others in my area. None has received funding from any outsider. They are funded by the participants. There are thousands of Tea Party chapters around the country. The claim that the Kochs funded more than a few is slanderous.  Are Sorkin's, HBO's and Time Warner's Progressive views so lacking in merit that they need to make up wholesale lies about the Tea Party to make any headway?

The 800 pound gorilla, on whose largesse Sorkin's salary depends,  is Wall Street; Ron and Rand Paul threaten the endless subsidies that Sorkin's sugar daddies at Time Warner provide him. As a conglomerate Time Warner has depended on and continues to depend on Wall Street and money center banks for its frail existence--and the crony capitalism Progressivism has created.   The one special interest that the media will inevitably protect--and The Newsroom is no exception--are the money center banks and Wall Street.

Here is a list of the recipients of Time Warner's political donations. These are the politicians who benefit from Sorkin's Newsroom.
